Who Is Practical Support For?

Our practical support is for construction workers and their families who need help adapting their home or living environment following illness, injury or disability.

This support is designed for people whose circumstances have changed and who may be struggling to live safely, independently or with dignity in their current home.

What we can help with

Practical support may include:

  • Home adaptations to improve accessibility
  • Essential repairs linked to health or mobility needs
  • Changes that make daily living safer or more manageable

All projects are assessed individually, based on need, safety and impact.

Who can apply?

You can apply for practical support if you or a close family member:

  • Works, or has worked, in the UK construction industry or an associated role, and
  • Is living with a life-changing or limiting condition that affects daily living

If you are unsure whether your situation qualifies, please contact us and we will help you understand the next steps.

Apply For Practical Support

To be considered, you will need to complete a full application form, including disclosure of financial and personal information. This ensures we can assess eligibility and deliver practical support effectively.

Please understand that requests for help are assessed based on a clear set of criteria and must comply with Band of Builders’ charitable objectives. Sadly, we are not able to help in all cases.

For any queries, please email applications@bandofbuilders.org.

FAQs

What is meant by practical support?

Practical support refers to tangible assistance, such as home modifications, ramps, bathrooms, kitchens and garden or landscaping projects, designed to improve daily life for construction workers and their families.

Can family members receive practical support?

Yes. Band of Builders recognises that supporting families is just as important as supporting the construction worker, so dependants and spouses are eligible.

How long does it take to receive support?

Timescales vary depending on the type and complexity of the project. Our team assesses each case individually to provide practical support as efficiently as possible.

Can I request multiple practical support projects?

We focus on the most urgent and impactful needs first, but additional support may be considered once initial projects are completed.

Do I need to be a current construction worker to apply?

No. Former construction workers and their families, as well as those in roles associated with the industry, are also eligible.
