Our Story – Band of Builders

Band of Builders (BoB) began with one construction worker’s simple act of kindness, a heartfelt gesture that sparked a nationwide movement. What started as a call for help quickly united an entire community, revealing the deep compassion and solidarity within the UK construction industry. From that first project, BoB has grown into a national charity, standing with construction workers and their families through life’s toughest times, proving that together, we’re stronger.

It All Started
With Keith

It all began when our founder, Addam Smith, learned that his close friend and fellow construction worker, Keith Ellick, had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Wanting to do something, anything, to make life a little easier for Keith, Addam put out a call on social media asking for help to landscape Keith’s garden. The response was overwhelming. Construction workers from all over the UK stepped up. That single post sparked the first project that would ultimately transform Keith’s entire home.

Building Lives, Not Just Homes

The momentum didn’t stop there. What was born from friendship and solidarity became Band of Builders: a community of volunteers and supporters united by a single belief that “Together Stronger” isn’t just a motto, it’s a way of life. From that first project, the heart and mission of BoB was firmly set.

In the years since, BoB has completed life-changing projects across the country, ranging from accessible bathrooms and kitchens to full home renovations and bespoke builds designed to meet specific needs. Each project is delivered by volunteers: skilled construction workers who freely give their time and expertise to support one of their own. It’s not only skilled construction workers that volunteer. Our projects are carried by the people who are more than happy to come along and help sweep up and make tea.

A Community That Shows Up

By 2019, the impact and scale of our work earned Band of Builders charity status in England and Wales. Whilst the registration was new, the mission remained the same: to support members of the UK construction industry and their families in their hour of need with dignity, respect and hands-on help.

Band of Builders isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about people. Every project tells a story, every volunteer makes a difference, and every supporter helps us reach someone who needs a lifeline. The delivery value of our projects now exceeds £1 million, but their true worth lies in the lives changed, the homes made safer and more accessible, and the hope restored.

More Than A Charity — A Movement

As BoB has grown, so too has the network of partners and sponsors who stand behind us. We collaborate with major industry names and grassroots supporters alike, all driven by the same core belief: that no one in the construction industry should face hardship alone. Companies that sponsor Band of Builders often encourage head office staff to volunteer on-site for a day, giving them a first-hand look at the charity’s impact, whilst also supporting their organisation’s ESG commitments.

From a garden makeover for Keith to a national charity championing practical, financial and wellbeing support, BoB continues to lead with heart, skill and solidarity.

At the centre of it all? A community that always shows up, tools in hand and ready to make a difference.

When the construction industry stands together, we can build more than homes, we can build hope. That’s the spirit of Band of Builders. That’s our story.
