The Crisis And Resilience Fund: Supporting Construction Workers When It Matters Most
January can be an incredibly heavy month. For many construction workers, the new year doesn’t arrive with a fresh start, it arrives with uncertainty. With reduced work, rising bills and the emotional aftermath of the festive period, pressure can quickly build. Against this backdrop, the Government’s upcoming launch of the Crisis and Resilience Fund in April is a timely and important development.
Announced as a new national safety net, the Crisis and Resilience Fund is designed to help people facing sudden financial shocks, which is something we see far too often at Band of Builders.
A New Government Safety Net Arriving In April
From April, local councils across the UK will begin delivering support through the Crisis and Resilience Fund. The fund is intended to provide emergency, short-term help for people experiencing unexpected expenses or a sudden drop in income, such as a broken boiler, illness, redundancy or other unavoidable disruptions.
For construction workers, particularly those who are self-employed or working contract to contract, even a brief interruption can cause lasting financial strain. The Crisis and Resilience Fund aims to step in early, helping people stabilise before short-term pressure becomes a long-term crisis.
When Pressure Builds Quietly
Financial pressure rarely arrives all at once. It builds slowly with a missed payment, an unexpected repair, time off work due to illness or injury. For construction workers, particularly those who are self-employed, even a short interruption to income can have a lasting impact.
The Crisis and Resilience Fund is designed to step in at these moments, helping people manage short-term shocks before they turn into long-term crises.
What We’re Seeing Across The Industry
At Band of Builders, this picture is all too familiar. In 2025 alone, we received 374 applications for support. In over three-quarters of cases, financial difficulty was a key factor but money was rarely the only issue. Many applicants were also facing mental health challenges, housing insecurity, illness or caring responsibilities.
These numbers matter but what matters more are the people behind them. The Crisis and Resilience Fund recognises that financial stress is often tied to wider emotional and practical pressures and that support must be flexible, timely and compassionate.
How The Crisis And Resilience Fund Can Help
The Crisis and Resilience Fund provides emergency support through local councils to help people manage sudden, unavoidable costs. It is intended to relieve immediate pressure, whether that’s covering essentials, managing a short-term income gap or helping someone stay safe and secure in their home.
For construction workers already stretched thin, this kind of support can offer breathing space and time to regroup without the fear of things spiralling further.
Band Of Builders: Support That Understands
Whilst the Crisis and Resilience Fund offers vital public support, Band of Builders exists specifically for construction workers and their families. Last year alone, we received 293 financial grant applications, alongside requests for practical projects and wellbeing support.
We understand the realities of life in the construction industry, the physical demands, the unpredictability of work and the reluctance many feel about asking for help. That’s why our approach is rooted in dignity, respect and understanding.
Reaching Out Is A Strength
January can feel isolating, especially when you’re used to being the one others rely on. It’s important to remember that asking for help isn’t failure, it’s an act of courage. Whether through the Crisis and Resilience Fund or Band of Builders’ own support services, there are people ready to listen and help you navigate what comes next.
You don’t have to face it alone.
Building Resilience Together
The Crisis and Resilience Fund plays an important role in protecting people during moments of financial shock. However, real resilience comes from connection, compassion and community.
At Band of Builders, we believe the construction industry is at its strongest when it stands together. If this January feels overwhelming, please know that support exists and that brighter days can still be built, one step at a time.
