Volunteers take on National 3 Peaks Challenge to raise money for tradespeople in need

A group of 12 volunteers raced against the clock to complete the National 3 Peaks Challenge to raise vital funds for tradespeople in need.

The group scaled the three highest peaks of Scotland (Ben Nevis, 1345m), England (Scafell Pike, 978m) and Wales (Snowdon,1085m), walking a total of 23 miles and ascending 3,064 metres, in just 24 hours to raise cash for Band of Builders, a charitable organisation which provides practical assistance for tradesmen and women in need.

The group of seven walkers and five support crew started their mission at 1pm on Saturday, taking on Ben Nevis in difficult weather conditions and temperatures of -7C. After descending the mountain, the group continued their mission to Scafell Pike, taking on the peak in the early hours of the morning in torrential rain, strong winds and limited visibility. The final leg of the challenge took them to Wales and Snowdon. With no let-up from the weather, the team pressed on with a few injuries, completing the challenge in just over 23 hours.

Band of Builders volunteer Martin O’Donnell, a roofer from Manchester, said: “Our challenge certainly had its ups and downs reaching the top of Ben Nevis and celebrating with our support team at the bottom, to the frankly terrifying climb of Scafell Pike in total darkness with storm force winds and then climbing Snowdon in constant driving rain.”

“After all that though I’m so happy we did it and was able to raise so much money. Today I’m feeling a bit low because I miss team but there’s always next year to go again.”

So far the group has raised a total of just over £7,000 for Band of Builders, which will go towards future projects. Most recently, the group carried out renovations at the home and garden of Jamie Thompson, a builder who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in October 2014.

Band of Builders Trustee Gavin Crane who also participated in the challenge, added “This has been an amazing achievement for Band of Builders and we are overwhelmed by the amount of money that has been raised to help fund future projects.”

“I’d like to thank the whole team including the other walkers, support crew and sponsors for making this event such a success.”
