When tradespeople hit crisis, Band of Builders steps in.

REAL STORIES

What started as a dream to create more space for his wife and four children became an impossible challenge when Ipswich builder Jay House was diagnosed with spinal cancer in 2024.

For two years, Jay had been building a home extension himself during evenings and weekends. But after his diagnosis, the project came to a sudden stop, leaving his family living on a building site and without a functioning kitchen. For 18 months, they relied on a makeshift setup consisting of an air fryer, portable hob and appliances on wheels, with no sink and no normal family space.

Having already overcome the life-changing amputation of his right leg years earlier, Jay faced another devastating setback as cancer caused multiple fractures in his spine, leaving him unable to continue the work he had started.

After seeing another Band of Builders project, Jay reached out for help. In response, 28 volunteers came together over 14 days to complete the extension, transforming an unfinished building site into a safe, practical and welcoming family home. With a project value of £43,000, the support gave Jay and his family something invaluable: the chance to focus on making memories together, rather than living with the daily challenges of an unfinished home.
